To mark the release of its latest translated work, Racism And Racial Discrimination In The Workplace, the AFMD is organising an international conference on the 7th of October:
Tackling Racism and Racial Discrimination In the Workplace; French Universalism vs The Rest of The World?
In our book titled Origins-Related Discriminations: How To Prevent Them And Take Action In The Workplace, we state that ‘organisations can constitute social spaces in which employees’ representations and practices may evolve, thus acting as an lever of change within society as a whole.’
Social movements often oppose the French universalist model when conceiving tangible actions to fight racial discriminations. What is the role of employers in these debates? Where do organisations stand regarding racism in the workplace?
This topic raises several other questions such as: how to fight against racism and its manifestations at work as an employer, a manager, a colleague? How do the social, cultural and legal contexts of a country influence the actions taken in that regard?
To address these questions, the AFMD wishes to create a space where experts from all fields can compare their point of view and discuss. During the conference, lecturers and researchers, European networks and multinational-groups representatives will address the topic of racism in the workplace and see how French universalism determines the means of action to fight against racial discriminations.
This conference will take place online on the 7th of October, from 2pm to 4pm (Paris time). The discussions will be in English; French subtitles will be provided.

Dans le cadre de la #SERI2022 et à l'occasion de la sortie de la version anglaise de notre ouvrage Le racisme et la discrimination raciale au travail, l'AFMD organise une conférence à portée internationale :
"Racisme et discrimination raciale au travail : l'universalisme français vs. le reste du monde ?"
Dans notre ouvrage Discriminations liées à l'origine, nous affirmons que ‘les entreprises peuvent constituer des lieux de changement privilégiés au sein desquels les représentations et les pratiques des salarié.es sont susceptibles d'évoluer, ce qui peut ensuite constituer un levier de changement pour l'ensemble de la société.’
Lorsqu’il s’agit de penser des actions concrètes pour lutter contre les discriminations raciales, les mouvements militants s’opposent souvent au modèle universaliste français. Où se situe le monde du travail dans ces débats ? Quel rôle a-t-il à jouer ?
Quelle posture adopter en tant qu’employeur, que manager, que collaborateur ou collaboratrice ? Quelles différences peut-il exister entre des filiales françaises de groupes internationaux, et des organisations françaises implantées à l’étranger ?
Pour répondre à ces questions, nous proposons de croiser les regards d’expert·es : docteur·es en sciences sociales et spécialistes des aires anglophones, réseaux européens ou encore représentant·es de groupes privés implantés en France et à l’international.
Cette conférence aura lieu en ligne et en anglais, le 7 octobre 2022, de 14h à 16h. Des sous-titres en français seront disponibles.
